Mont Marcou is located in the commune of St Geniès de Varensal, in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Languedoc. From the Croix sommitale, at 1087m altitude, it offers an exceptional view of the Lacaune Mountains, the Upper Mare Valley, the Escandorgue, the Grands Causses, the Caroux-Espinouse Massif, as far as the vast Biterrois wine-growing plain and, in the distance, the Mediterranean Sea...a palette of colours of an incredible richness that changes with the seasons.
Its southern slope is blocked by a fault that brings together green Marcory schists and ancient dolomitic (Cambrian) limestone, thus generating a very specialized flora where, a few meters from each other, cohabit the scrublands of the calcareous garrigues and chestnut trees of acidic soils.
Geologically rich, the site is known in the world of speleologists by its famous Grand Aven du Mont Marcou, 345m deep, and its geode des vertes, green aragonite concretions.
