This arch dam, built between 1959 and 1963 by the Compagnie du Bas-Rhône-Languedoc, is mainly used to irrigate the Biterrois plains and supply drinking water to western Hérault and southern Aude. It is 83 m high and has a crest extension of 280 m. It is equipped for hydroelectric production and flood control during heavy storms. Water is retained during autumn and winter, and returned to the river in spring and summer. Regulation helps to maintain the Orb?s low-water level during the summer.
