The Mates Basses site allows visitors to follow in the footsteps of the past and discover a typical natural heritage rich in biodiversity. The site is emblematic of Languedoc's built and agricultural heritage. After the Second World War, the Mates Basses estate was entirely devoted to vineyards, orchards and livestock. It was gradually abandoned and covered with oak undergrowth. Today, the site is made up of numerous schist walls and structures, a formidable testimony to the know-how and techniques of dry stone (recognized as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO). The site offers 2 interpretation trails (biodiversity and human activities). The "Nature et Cultures à Faugères" wine trail also passes through Les Mates Basses. Since 2023, a 3-meter-high, 8-meter-long work of art by Sétois artist Jean DENANT has graced the site.
